Palm bushes in the Salzkammergut: diversity and tradition

Writer's picture: Eva MeilerEva Meiler

The Palmbusch tradition is deeply rooted in the Salzkammergut. Every region, often even every place, has its own binding rules. In Weyregg am Attersee, we bind our palm bushes with 7 different evergreen branches. In Steinbach am Attersee, dry beech leaves of young beech trees are added, while in Bad Ischl the palm bushes are significantly larger and consist of a Krampen and a Stanglpalm, which is decorated with 4 apples and colourful ribbons in 4 colours.

No matter what shape, the consecrated palm bushes should ensure protection from disaster for people, animals, house and farm as well as a good harvest.
