Tradition are important in the Salzkammergut.

One of the most important traditions is the Krampus, a figure that roams the streets on the night before St. Nicholas Day.

Unlike popular belief, the Krampus is not a figure of punishment. He is actually a protector against evil. He is supposed to keep all winter spirits away from farms and homes.

The Krampus's mask is meant to show that he is a human creation. The whip is meant to bring luck and fertility for the coming year. The bells are meant to drive away dangerous spirits with their noise.
